Becoming a developer

What is a developer?

A developer, also known as a programmer, is someone who creates computer programs and software. They use their skills to write instructions that tell computers what to do. Developers use special programming languages like Python, JavaScript, or Java to write code. They work on different types of projects, like creating websites, building mobile apps, or designing video games.

If you’re someone who loves being creative, solving problems, and working with technology, then being a developer is a great choice for you. As a developer, you can use your imagination to build things using code, like websites, apps, and games. It’s like being an artist, but with a computer as your canvas.
You’ll also enjoy being a developer if you enjoy finding solutions to challenges and puzzles.
Every day, you’ll get to analyze problems and use your coding skills to come up with smart solutions.

Having completed a general high school education is great start. There are tons of different directions to take from there:

Indigenous Programs

There are incredible programs designed to increase digital literacy while incorporating cultural teachings! ComIT, Indigenous Friends Association, and the First Nations Technology Council offer specifically tailored programs for Indigenous youth and individuals seeking to expand their knowledge of digital technologies and explore job opportunities in the tech sector.

Boot Camps

Bootcamps are immersive 3-month training programs designed to teach participants the skills of becoming a designer in the technology industry and immediately entering the workforce. You can select bootcamps that cover digital marketing, cyber security, and data science. While these programs do start with the basics of each topic, they do ramp up and eventually get into some advance leanings.

College and Universities

You can receive certificates, diplomas, and degrees to become and enter the technology industry through many of our BC colleges and universities. The nice thing is studies can be broad and still provide the skills necessary to enter work in the tech sector. It is recommended to take a study that covers business, software, administration, IT, data, and/ networks to have a grasp of a skill that can be used in the technology industry.

Learn through Youtube

YouTube is not only a place for watching funny videos, but it’s also a treasure trove of knowledge and learning. Whether you want to learn how to play an instrument, draw amazing artwork, code your own video game, or even perform cool science experiments, there are countless YouTube channels that can teach you step-by-step. You’ll find enthusiastic and talented creators who break down complex topics into easy-to-understand videos. So, if you’re curious and ready to learn, grab your device, head to YouTube, and type in “how to” video and begin learning.
